Malta: A Mediterranean escape

Malta is an ideal Mediterranean escape, with sunshine all year round, so many sights to see and great hospitality on offer. It has a fascinating past, on display all around.

In the 16^th century capital of Valetta, a cityscape of steeples and domes set against the clear blue sky will take your breath away. Not only is it full of beautiful churches and Baroque architecture, befitting its World Heritage City status, it is a shopper’s heaven, its quaint narrow streets brimming with tiny antique and jewellery shops. There is so much to see, you can travel back to another age in the awe-inspiring museums or just relax in the lush green gardens.

Marsaxlokk, a village about six kilometres south of the capital, is a picture postcard place, with beautiful scenery and one of the oldest ports on the island, filled with hundreds of fishing boats in every colour, shape and size, from the large modern type to the little rowing boats bobbing in the bay. A fishing village, the place offers delectable seafood in its restaurants too.

To the west of Valetta, the village of Mellieha offers peace and relaxation, watersports and sightseeing. The bay has a rich sandy beach whilst the shops sell pretty souvenirs.

But as well as all this, it has a vibrant nightlife too, with world-famous DJs flocking and performing at the clubbing hotspots. St Julians and Paceville have a thriving scene, with sultry clubs as well as more laidback cocktail bars. The Pioneer Road in Buggiba becomes one great big party in the summer season, bursting with life when the revellers get together on the promenade. If however, you would rather sit back and watch a show, the beautiful Manoel Theatre in Valetta is always showing concerts and operas.
