When to Go
School holidays are
held during July and August and as you might expect the roads,
particularly in the popular areas tend to be crowded. London is always
full of visitors at this time.
In 1995 the summer was exceptionally
hot with very dry conditions but normally you can expect your share of
reasonable weather right through from May until September.

What to Wear
The weather can be
very variable and it's best to come prepared. You'll find that the South
and West are generally much warmer than the North and East. You may find a
light raincoat useful in the summer together with a cardigan for the
evenings. In the winter bring a warm top coat
Casual clothing is the
order of the day if you intend to have a relaxed visit but many of the
better hotels and restaurants still expect a degree of formality in
dressing for meals.
Travel Documents
EU Nationals only
need a valid identity card to enter Britain. Nationals from other
countries require a passport and some may need a visa. Check before you
leave home..
No vaccinations are required
Health
Members of EU countries
have agreements which cover health care. Some other states such as New
Zealand and Sweden are also eligible for treatment through the National
Health service. Make sure your travel insurance includes medical care for
foreign travel.
At least one chemist will always be found open in every large town until
around 8pm. You can get the address of a local hospital or doctor from the
telephone operator by dialling 100(free of charge)
Foreign Embassies.
All the Embassies are in London but some
countries also maintain consulates in other major cities. If you need to
contact your Embassy and don't have the number dial 192 and the telephone
operator will give it to you.

to 110 volts but you will need an adaptor for the British three pin square

Crime and Theft
In line with the
rest of the world the incidence of crime is increasing although the UK is
still relatively safe. Don't wander around after dark in the larger cities
unless you have good advice or a guide. Watch out for pickpockets in large
crowds such as street markets. Keep your valuables in the hotel safe and
lock everything in the car boot out of sight. Try to use as public a car
park as possible.
